Paul Appleby has degrees in mathematics (Warwick University, 1976) and mathematical statistics (Birmingham University, 1977). He joined the Cancer Epidemiology Unit full-time in October 1996, having previously worked part-time at the Clinical Trials Services Unit and Epidemiological Studies Unit (CTSU) and other groups within the Nuffield Department of Population Health.

He is responsible for the preparation and statistical analysis of data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) Oxford cohort study as well as various collaborative analyses. Paul is an experienced Fortran and Stata statistical package programmer, and makes extensive use of graph plotting subroutines. He has also developed a nutrient database based on “The Composition of Foods” and its supplements, which is used to estimate nutrient intakes from food frequency questionnaires or other food consumption data.  He switched to part-time working in April 2015.
